Variety Country Musical Weekend

I had the pleasure of watching my very first country musical this past weekend. It was a wonderful experience, lots of laughs and amazement. Patti Rabaza and Julia Laskowski (say it 3 times really fast) were the performers of Country Gravy and Other Obsessions, a relationship seminar dedicated to fixin all your problems with your significant other. These are experts that cover all types of situational issues you may endure while married or dating. If you're single, they have some advice for you too! From opera to showtunes these women really know how to entertain and make sure you leave them forgetting all your problems.

Held at TheaterLab, located in the first ward district of Houston, Texas.

Something that reminded me of this production was one of my favorite sketches from female comedian Carol Burnett. She is a legend, not exactly of my generation but she is definitely a pioneer in television sitcoms, writing, comedy and broadway.

everyone loves a good lyricist with a nice flow and melody. A catchy hook, especially with some bass knocking. I know I do, and that was the remedy I grew up on to know and love southern hip-hop music. Mind you that was years ago, and like seasons, my taste in music evolved into different sounds and genres. I'll be honest, I do miss the old rap/hip-hop days only because I feel like it meant more to be a rapper back then, the things they talked about were of substance (most of the time), people who were successful rappers/hip-hop artists in the entertainment industry in the early millenium and even in the early nineties could maintain a decent career, they were able to put forth albums with their own creativity (i think) and even keep their private lives from spilling over.

In today's world of hip-hop the rules are still the same, but the game has changed tremendously. I haven't taken the time to really dissect what I believe is the cause of this epidemic of the non-substance semi quasi hipster/hoodlum drug enthused half sing half put words together that aren't in the same iambic pentameter rap, but I do want to express my interests in some of the more hopeful artists and some of my woes with the not-so-hopeful artists. This may seem cruel or even a little ridiculous but please note, you can always get on someone else's blogging dick.

As a disclaimer, I have given an ear to other artists that have reached stardom such as A$AP Rocky, Kreayshawn, Kendrick Lamar, and all these other people who seem to be making their way in the rap industry. It's not that i am not interested, just that I'm not impressed.

I would first like to give props to big krit, for he has risen above most average southern rappers into a lane of his own. He's spoken some truths on life, religion and living in the south as a black guy. His beats are definitely a reminiscent of UGK and Outkast as well as local Houston native rappers.

Another hopeful rapper I would like to see advance is Action Bronson. Chances are you've probably never heard of this guy but he's definitely on the come up in a real interesting way. See, Mr. Bronson is of Albanian decent (ohhh) and he also was a gourmet chef (la-la) in New York City. Probably one of the more GINUWINELY sophisticated rappers that I've ever heard or seen on the internet. Peep him and his photography set with genius and skinny sexy man Terry Richardson.

Chuck English is another prominent one who I believe is also making some solo-artist head way. Chuck is someone who has been in the game for a minute, I would say he's easily one of the most underrated producers in the hip-hop genre. He has the productivity skills to reach an iconic status of a dilla. please if you haven't already, get his latest mixtape "WRKING". It's a very cohesive instrumental piece.

A local Houston native, and ultimate party starter Fat Tony comes to mind as a prospective hip-hop/rap artist on the move. This guy has charisma to no end. Along with his latest album Rabdargab, Fat Tony keeps the trunks rattling as well as heads thinking with his intricate words and beats. You can really hear his influences on his music and see them public in his clothing appeareance. He's punk-rap-pop-soul and r&b all into one.

This will conclude my list for now, there are plenty others that I will post on. Not to mention I have yet to indulge on the female scene. I will definitely address my queens soon, so keep your panties on.

I discovered the brilliance that is Connan Mockasin, and I am very moved. I first heard about Connan on a SpankRock interview with GQ. Spankrock mentioned how amazing this guy Connan's music was, and I very much agree. If you're not into psychedelic music, I wouldn't suggest this for you. This music video "Forever Dolphin Love" is also the name of his album, which was released back in March of this year. In the video a story is told about two creatures who go through different realms and find love.

Erykah Badu sings one of my favorite songs off of her latest album ,"Return of the Ankh" which is called "Your Funeral". The footage might seem a little redundant because of the shots and angles used over and over, but somehow it seems to show a more intimate side of Erykah. Also seen in the video is her producer (I think) Mr. RC, and Mr. Jay Electronica asleep in the background (the way he wakes up in the end is hilarious). I recently saw this, and loved the movie. It's a very insightful film about the illness of cancer and how it affects the life of a young man. Seth Rogan plays his typical "funny-douchie-adorable-fuzzy" role, while other supporting actors like Anjelica(creepy old lady) Huston do an exceptional part in this movie as well. It will make you cry, while other scenes are hilarious. If you want to watch something that's cool and not too heavy on all the special effects bullshit, then go see it.

Mega artist Pharrell Williams collaborates with Palladium Boots in creating a documentary about the effects of the tsunami that hit Japan in March of 2011. Upon his journey Pharrell speaks with some of the artists there as well as some locals in regards to how this disaster has affected them. I have never seen Tokyo with my own eyes, but from watching this I have a much deeper respect and knowledge of the city. From looking at all of the city lights and the different types of artists that Pharrell speaks with, there seems to be an almost infinite ora of inspiration in that environment.

artist, gate keeper of all things cool and raw in the L.E.S. of new york, mr.clayton patterson has shared his life in the big apple with a camera lens. I stumbled on his trailer for one of his documentaries called "captured" in which gives a very real history of the neighborhood that is the lower east side of new york.

now, me living all the way down in texas and being born in the 80's doesn't give me credit to say that i know what went on in new york during that time, BUT after watching this film and interviews of mr.patterson, one can only imagine and feel what it's like to see an entire place change from decade to decade.

for all of those who don't know too much about the L.E.S. of new york city, this part of town was considered a very dangerous yet cultural enviornment where some of the greatest artists, festivals, bars, clubs and bands all came to be. Some people think that this neighborohood now has changed for the better while those still living there only reminisce of what and how the vibrant the area used to be.

i feel as if this is a common issue happening in all historic neighborhoods in the United States. if you live in one area of town that is somewhat close to a metropolitan area, you have probably seen changes in the community as well as residency.

While enjoying a wonderful celebration of the day of yesterday, i had the opportunity to experience the greatness of the southern gentleman that is Big K.R.I.T.. i loved alllllllllllll 21 tracks of his somewhat newly released mixtape, "the return of 4eva". From beginning to end, I was moved, and very crunk. Imagine a ugk feel with a nice andre 3k and david banner vibe to it. His delivery and lyricism is very straightforward, if you're from the south, this is the trunk rattlin mixtape for you. If you're not from the south, well that's just too bad, but at least you have an opportunity to hear some good wholesome southern rap music.

this has to be one of the spookiest mac spooky films i've ever seeen.
a film called, "Anti Christ" directed by Lars Von Trier
"When nature turns evil, true terror awaits."

made my heart rate go from normal to bizerk after watching this trailer.
its just that raw, and edgy, makes you ponder about alot of things.
realeased in early october, this is a film i look forward to watching very soon.

but this morning, i woke up to the interviews and reviews of the Fantastic Film fest that takes place in Austin texas. For those who don't know what fantastic film fest is, it is the largest film festival showing flicks in genres of science fiction, horror, and comedy and other types of movies coming to theatres. Films such as apacalypto, there will be blood, and eagle eye have also been premiered at this event. the channel i saw this wonderful festivity take place was on the IFC channel, (it's one of my favorite spots) which basically broadcasts (in jay-z voice) "all indie everything" with a splash of trailers. if you need a fixin, IFC is your safe heaven.

i took an ear at Mark Ronson's East Village Radio Show, and stumbled upon this gem.

I'd heard (via acetoace blog) that Mark Ronson was a supergroup with indie faves Theodophilus London and Sam Sparro, but hadn't heard whether anything had come of it. Well something did and here it is. Like the show and indeed Mark himself, the track is kind of a mess, but I still love it and can't stop going back for more.

he goes by the name of Dam-funk, and if you're anything like me, he's someone to keep the party going. From the super fresh of casual cool west coast, he resides in Leimert Park, California.

He has an eclectic mix of soul, boogie and bass that keeps it extra funky. his styles reflect the sounds of the early prince, slave, aurra and 1980's soul music your parents probably made you on.

i enjoy this video he did here at LIVE studio's Backyard Afternoon party in LA. shout-out to Gangster Red in the Dam-funk rendition of "I should tell ya momma"

A hater is someone who is jealous and envious and spends all their time trying to make you look small so they can look tall.
They are very negative people to say the least. Nothing is ever good enough!
When you make your mark, you will always attract some haters…
That’s why you have to be careful with whom you share your blessings and your dreams, because some folk can’t handle seeing you blessed…
It’s dangerous to be like somebody else… If God wanted you to be like somebody else, He would have given you what He gave them! Right?
You never know what people have gone through to get what they have…
The problem I have with haters is that they see my glory, but they don’t know my story…
If the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, you can rest assured that the water bill is higher there too!
We’ve all got some haters among us!
Some people envy you because you can:
a) Have a relationship with God
b) Light up a room when you walk in
c) Start your own business
d) Tell a man / woman to hit the curb (if he / she isn’t about the right thing)
e) Raise your children without both parents being in the home

Haters can’t stand to see you happy.
Haters will never want to see you succeed.
Most of our haters are people who are supposed to be on our side.
How do you handle your undercover haters?

You can handle these haters by:
1. Knowing who you are & who your true friends are *(VERY IMPORTANT!!)

2. Having a purpose to your life: Purpose does not mean having a job. You can have a job and still be unfulfilled. A purpose is having a clear sense of what God has called you to be. Your purpose is not defined by what others think about you.

3. By remembering what you have is by divine prerogative and not human manipulation.

Fulfill your dreams! You only have one life to live…when its your time to leave this earth, you ‘want’ to be able to say, ‘I’ve lived my life and fulfilled ‘my’ dreams,… Now I’m ready to go HOME!

When God gives you favor, you can tell your haters, ‘Don’t look at me…Look at Who is in charge of me…’

i heard a lady by the name of ragen fykes who is another up and coming artist out of portland, oregon..(i couldnt point to it on a map) but she has released a 3-track LP, called "with love", that is something worth investing some ear time in.along with dj/producer ohmega watts, this duo is known as M64.i would say that these guys are definitely on yazzawatch!
